Why Things Go Wrong
Our feet support our whole body weight so when things go wrong this can cause problems elsewhere in the body. At the same time, changes in body posture can lead to problems in the feet.
Many of us inherit certain foot types, which are more likely to develop problems and many foot problems arise because of injury or disease. In order to work efficiently the foot must have several characteristics:
|

|
|
- A flexible ankle joint.
- A stable position of the ankle bone (talus).
- Good circulation and nerve supply.
- Strong leg muscles.
- Flexible big toe joint.
|
Problems often arise when the bones and joints of the feet lose their natural position. This causes a weakness of the foot and prevents it from working normally. Eventually this will lead to pain and discomfort.
What are foot orthotics and how do they work?
Foot orthotics are specially designed shoe inserts, which help restore the natural position of the foot. The type of orthotic we need depends on the type of foot we have and how the foot is changing position. By careful selection of the correct orthotic the foot is able to return to its natural position and function. This will prevent damaging compensation in other joints, muscles and ligaments and reduce pain. It is always important to address other factors that may be contributing to symptoms, e.g. muscle tightness, joint flexibility and reduced awareness of the position of our joints.
